Rippling

Connect Rippling to ShiftControl and make HR data your single source of truth for user management — nested departments included.

Overview​

The Rippling connector connects Rippling as your HR system of record to ShiftControl, so hires, role changes, and departures flow automatically into user management. Rippling is also the first connector that feeds ShiftControl your real department hierarchy — if you nest departments under parents in Rippling, ShiftControl builds matching nested groups instead of flattening everything into one list.

How It Works​

  • One API token, created in Rippling under Tools → Developer → API Tokens. No OAuth app to install and no admin consent screen.
  • Syncs every hour: names (including preferred names), work email, employee ID, job title, department, work location, team, manager, employment type, and start and end dates.
  • Nested departments: "Platform Engineering" under "Engineering" arrives as a properly nested group, not a flat entry.
  • Remote workers are handled as remote — no phantom office assignment.
  • Missing permissions are named: if your token is missing a permission, ShiftControl tells you the exact fields it cannot read instead of quietly syncing partial data.

Getting Started​

Step 1: Create an API token in Rippling​

Open API Tokens

In Rippling, go to Tools → Developer → API Tokens.

Create a token

Create a token with read access to workers, work locations, and departments.

Copy the token

Keep it somewhere safe to paste into ShiftControl.

warning

Rippling revokes an API token if it goes unused for 30 days, or if the person who created it is terminated. Have an admin who is sticking around create it.

Step 2: Add Rippling in ShiftControl​

Open Integrations

In ShiftControl, open Integrations → Directory and pick Rippling.

Paste the token

Paste the API token and save. ShiftControl validates it on the spot and tells you if any permission is missing.

Let the first sync run

The first sync runs within the hour — or start one manually and preview it before anything changes.

Things to Know​

  • Sync runs hourly. You can also trigger an on-demand sync from the connector's actions menu.
  • Offboardings are driven by the HR record. When someone is terminated in Rippling, the change flows through ShiftControl to your connected directories.
  • Preview before you trust it. Run a manual sync and preview the changes before the first automatic run alters anything.
